WVAFC Recognizes Two Healthcare Champions

On June 15, the WV Association of Free Clinics (WVAFC) recognized two individuals for their dedication to and support of the free clinics in West Virginia by presenting each with a "Champion of Free Clinics Award" for 2012. The first award was presented to Jeff Graham, Executive Director of Beckley Health Right and Mercer Charitable Clinic. When Mercer Health Right had to close unexpectedly for business reasons, Graham, with the help of the WVAFC Board of Directors, led the effort to get that clinic re-opened and to take care of its many patients. Through Graham's yeoman's efforts, the clinic was re-opened in fewer than six weeks with very little service interruption to the uninsured population of that part of the state.

The second award was presented to Danielle (Dani) Bishop a third year dental student at the WVU School of Dentistry. Through Dani's singular fund-raising efforts and perserverence, she raised $7,500 which she presented to Ebenezer Medical Outreach, Susan Dew Hoff Memorial Clinic and WV Health Right, all of which have on-site dental clinics. The funds will be equally divided among the three clinics. Dani raised the money by organizing a bowl-athon and through soliciting individual donations among her student constituency.

The WVAFC salutes and thanks both Jeff and Dani for their service to the uninsured adults of West Virginia.
