Who We Are

The West Virginia Association of Free Clinics (WVAFC), dba WV Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (WVAFCC) since the implementation of the ACA and Expanded Medicaid in WV in 2014, was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) on June 18, 2001 to advance and promote access to healthcare for uninsured and medically underserved West Virginians. It exists to advocate for WV's Free & Charitable clinics and the patients they serve, to secure funding sources necessary to treat the patients served by its member clinics' programs, and to assist the clinics with transitions and issues that impact all free & charitable clinics in West Virginia.  The WVAFCC strives to be a driving force for a just, accessible, and quality health care system statewide.

Eight free and charitable clinics (seven full-service and one dental-only) comprise the primary membership of the organization. The clinics' mission is to provide comprehensive patient centered health care to the thousands of State adults, ages 18 and up, who are uninsured/underinsured. The clinics are geographically dispersed throughout the state and are located in Beckley, Bluefield, Charleston, Clarksburg, Huntington, Morgantown, West Milford (dental only), and Wheeling.

Except for Health Access that serves only the residents of Harrison and Doddridge Counties and Susan Dew Hoff Memorial Clinic that serve only the residents of Harrison County, each clinic treats eligible patients as long as they are a resident of the State of West Virginia. As a result, WV's Free & Charitable Clinic service area encompasses all 55 West Virginia counties.

What We Do

The WVAFCC is best described as "a network of compassion, volunteerism and quality health care services for those who cannot afford health insurance." In addition to general medical and prescription services, Free Clinics may offer such services as oral health, specialty services (cardiac, podiatry, endocrinology), lab testing, diagnostic procedures, family planning, breast/cervical screening, health education, and group counseling (depression, anxiety, and stress).

  • WV's Free & Charitable Clinics care for over 42,000 working poor of West Virginia.
  • Focus on the overall needs of patients by providing medical, dental, pharmaceutical, behavior health, vision, and health education services and ensure a medical home for vulnerable at-risk West Virginians.
  • Fill hundreds of thousands life-sustaining prescriptions free of charge.
  • Rely on the services of more than 1,000 dedicated professionals who routinely volunteer.
