West Virginia Health Right, the state’s oldest and largest free clinic, recently achieved recognition as a Patient Centered Medical Home from the National Commission for Quality Assurance (NCQA). WV Health Right is one of the first free clinics in the nation to receive NCQA recognition.
The Patient Centered Medical Home is an approach to providing comprehensive healthcare through coordination and integration across all elements of the healthcare system (e.g., specialty care, hospitals, home health agencies) and the patient’s community (family, public, and private community based services). It is a model of practice in which a team of health professionals works collaboratively to provide the highest levels of care, access and communication, and quality and safety. A Patient Centered Medical Home allows better access to healthcare, increases patient satisfaction with care, and improves health outcomes.
“We are honored and extremely proud that WV Health Right’s integrated system of care, including medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and health education services, is now recognized through the prestigious NCQA,” said Patricia White, Executive Director of WV Health Right. “Even though our patient population is the uninsured working poor, this recognition is proof positive that our patients receive quality comprehensive primary and specialty care,” White said. “PPC-PCMH Recognition is yet another example of the steadfast dedication of our 450 medical and dental volunteers who make it possible for the clinic to serve more than 20,000 patients per year.”
To receive recognition, which is valid for three years, WV Health Right demonstrated the ability to meet the program’s key elements embodying the characteristics of the medical home. These key program components include:
“The patient-centered medical home promises to improve health and health care,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “The active, ongoing relationship between a patient and a clinician in medical homes fosters an all-too-rare goal in care: staying healthy and preventing illness in the first place. PPC-PCMH Recognition shows that WV Health Right has tools, systems, and resources to provide its patients with the right care at the right time.”
WV Health Right provides comprehensive medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and health education services, at no charge, to more than 20,000 uninsured impoverished adults from throughout West Virginia.
